*** How To Crash Proof An Iron Condor Trade ***

This month we put on an ‘Iron Bug’ version of the Iron Condor.

This is a version of the Iron Condor that we sometimes use during a wild market - as it provides a nice layer of protection against big losses (click the links above to see a similar trade during Octobers big crash)

What’s so interesting about this type of Iron Condor Trade is that if it was used in a portfolio margin account (an account that some brokers provide to their clients that bases a trades required margin on ACTUAL RISK in the trade) - the return on this trade = +24% against required margin - where if it was put on in a regular margin account: +5.1% (which is still a great 1 month return in our opinion!)

* THE CRASH PROOF IRON CONDOR TRADE * - Who cares if the market crashes? This Iron Condor seems to be able to withstand ANYTHING. During last months crash when I had this ‘Crash Proof Iron Condor’ Trade on - here’s what happened…

Ever since I started trading Iron Condors I always wondered how one would fare if a ‘Real’ Market Crash occured. For Iron Condor traders, other than a huge gap, a fast moving crash is just about the worse thing that can happen given the Iron Condors poor Risk / Reward ratio.

Last month is the closest thing I’ve experienced first hand to a crash (I think most would call it a crash) - and the ‘Crash Proof’ Iron Condor Position we had on did REMARKABLY well to say the least.

This Iron Condor (Click Here) is a version of the trade taught in the Iron Condor Strategy Guide. This version of the Iron Condor is used during periods of high volatility - for reasons you are about to see.

Had this Iron Condor trade been placed and managed in the traditional manner - it no doubt would have gotten creamed. Instead - using this particular version of the iron condor - this position actually made around 3 1/2 times the original credit brought in (what was originally expected to make) - in about 2 weeks time. That’s MORE than THREE times the amount of profit we were originally expecting to bring in.

Iron Condor: High Return Iron Condor Trading Results: 275% Gain? Is this for real?

Iron Condor: Recently I back tested a particular Iron Condor Option Trading Strategy in a very specific way (using very particular entry, exit, and management rules found here) – and the results were pretty spectacular.

In fact – these high return iron condor results were so impressive, I had to re test several times to make sure I hadn’t made a mistake. Each time they came out the same.

Now right off the bat, back testing various option trading strategies presents some issues that need to be addressed. It’s not quite the same as real trading. There are factors such as slippage, quirky data, and probably the most important: the emotional roller coaster involved with real trading that isn’t present when rolling back through time on a software program and the stress involved with having REAL hard earned money on the line.

But… even if I cut this Iron Condor Trade return in HALF to take into account the differences between real trading and back trading (which I think is more than enough) a 137% return on my investment is certainly fine by me.

So about those high return back testing results…

My entry, exit, management and adjustment rules I used were based on a ‘formula’ found in the Complete Iron Condor Strategy Guide E-Book by Optionbox.com (you can get a version of the guide for free thru email by going here).

An here are those iron condor strategy back tested results…

2006
12 Wins, 0 Losses
116.6 % Return

2007
11 Wins, 1 Loss
98.5% Return

2008
Jan thru Jun
6 Wins, 0 Losses
60.9% Return

Now math is certainly not my strong point, but I calculate this is around a 275 % return on investment in 2 and a half years – or just under 110% return per year. And if I cut this return in half to take into account the issues talked about earlier with backtesting – 55 % annual returns certainly aren’t too shabby!

So could this be for real? If I went out and started to trade this specific Iron Condor trade ‘formula’ in a live account, should I expect to start making 55% or better annual results?

We shall see…

CRASH PROTECTION For IRON CONDOR TRADES

Oct 08 was the closest thing many newer Iron Condor traders have experienced first hand to a crash - and below shows a ‘Crash Protected’ Iron Condors performance during that crash.

This trade is a version of the Iron Condor detailed in the Iron Condor Strategy Guide - which is used during periods of high volatility - for reasons you are about to see.

Had this Iron Condor trade been put on in the traditional manner - it most likely would have gotten creamed as the crash occurred. Instead - using this particular version of the Iron Condor - as shown in the graph below - resulted in around +28% in 2 weeks time - or 3 1/2 times the original credit (what it was originally expected to make).
